Our performance

  • All managers trained to IOSH Managing / Working Safely
  • All employees / operatives to be trained to IOSH Working Safely
  • We have completed over 125,000 certificates over the last 12 months and 40,000 repairs to life safety critical equipment such as lifts, fire alarm panels and gas boilers.
  • Orbit has completed 14,834 Fire Risk Assessment actions since 2016
  • We have completed 4367 Legionella Risk Assessment actions
  • We have sustained 100% gas compliance since February 2017 (20 consecutive months)
  • We were the first Housing Association ever to achieve Primary Authority Partnership with the West Midlands Fire Service
  • Our contractors carry out over 26,000 gas services and 13,000 repairs to gas heating systems.
  • Near Miss percentage increase 543% between 2016/17 and 2017/18.

Policy statement

Orbit is committed to providing high standards of health and safety at all times. We recognise our moral and legal duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, service users and any others who are affected by the acts of the organisation in its day-to-day operations.

Our vision - to lead in building thriving communities - is directly linked to this. In order to achieve our vision, we must commit to ensuring the health and safety of all those involved in our work, or who live or work in our properties and communities.

Our health and safety performance will be measured by clear and quantifiable set objectives. The aim is to achieve a progressively continuous improvement in the overall standards of our health and safety performance.

To do this, Orbit will invest in adequate resources which will help us to develop and maintain our policies and procedures. This will ensure we provide workplaces where a positive health and safety culture supports the elimination of risk to prevent injury or loss.

Health and safety is an integral part of our management function, and we make the safety of our workforce and customers paramount. All personnel are responsible for the implementation of this policy and every employee has a role to play in its success. 

We will actively engage all employees through consultation, communication and an effective health and safety management system across its workplaces. 

Orbit will enable and encourage all employees to make a positive contribution, ensuring it is an organisation that provides a positive safe and healthy environment in which to live and work.

Objectives

Orbit’s main objectives in managing Health & Safety are:

  • Prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health by managing the health and safety risks in the workplace.
  • Provide clear instructions and information, supervision and adequate training, to ensure employees are competent to do their work.
  • Engage and consult with employees on day-to-day health and safety conditions.
  • Implement emergency procedures – evacuation in case of fire or other significant incident.
  • Maintain safe and healthy working conditions, provide and maintain plant, equipment and machinery, and ensure safe storage/use of substances.

Governance

The Health & Safety Governance Structure has been formulated to demonstrate the following good practice principles set out in the IOD/HSE “Leading Health and Safety at Work” document: 

  • strong and active leadership from the top
  • effective ‘downward’ communication systems and management structures
  • visible and active commitment from the Board
  • the integration of good Health and Safety management with business decisions
  • worker involvement – engaging the workforce in the promotion and achievement of safe and healthy conditions
  • effective ‘upward’ communication
  • providing high quality training
  • assessment and review – identifying and managing Health and Safety risks
  • seeking (and following) the guidance of competent advisers
  • monitoring, reporting and reviewing performance

Delivery

The below is based on HSG65, Plan, Do, Check, Act and aims to further embed and embrace a positive Health & Safety Culture.

Property

In Orbit, we have a Property Compliance team, responsible for reducing risk to customers, staff, contractors and our buildings by running a comprehensive regime that checks and repairs key property services.

Our driver is to become the best performing housing provider in the country in terms of property compliance. 

We want to be able to demonstrate that our homes are the safest of any housing provider by:

  • Winning awards
  • Achieving PAS 7 fire risk management accreditation
  • Primary Authority Partnering with West Midlands Fire Service.

All properties and estates are subject to regular inspections and scheduled maintenance to ensure compliance, health, safety and wellbeing.
