Q&A with Sian Morris, Independent Living Scheme Officer

After being employed by another organisation as a carer, Sian joined Orbit as an Independent Living Scheme Officer and says she loves brightening up the days of the residents who live there.

  • What is your current role and what does it entail/what are your responsibilities?

I’m an Independent Living Scheme Officer. My job is to give people the support that they need to live independent lives and create a positive and vibrant place for them to live.

I work with the local community to host a range of social events for the residents and also look after the building – making sure that we keep up with general repairs and that the building is safe and well maintained for everyone who lives there.

  • What attracted you to joining Orbit?

I visited the scheme regularly as a carer in my previous organisation, so one of the main attractions to this role was the opportunity to stay in a scheme that I love and make a positive difference to people’s lives.

The flexibility and benefits that Orbit offers were also very appealing.

  • How have you developed/progressed since joining?

Upon joining Orbit I had a career development plan in place which helped me to learn my role in more depth and achieve a pay increase. I completed my plan within a few months and I am really looking forward to continue to grow and achieve my future aspirations with Orbit.

  • How has Orbit supported you to achieve your career goals and aspirations?

I have a regular one-to-one with my line manager each  month, and a buddy from another scheme. All my colleagues are amazing and so helpful, I only have to call them and they are there.

  • What do you enjoy most about your job/what makes you feel fulfilled or proud to work here?

I love that every day is different and you never know what to expect. But the thing that makes me feel most fulfilled in this job is the opportunity to brighten up people’s days, helping them live independently and seeing them enjoy the activities I put on.

  • What are your goals for the future, and do you feel that Orbit is an organisation that will help you get there?

I want to continue working for Orbit and looking after the scheme I am currently at. I was a carer for many years in and out of the scheme, and it has a special place in my heart. At the moment my goal is to keep getting to know all the residents, helping them and improving the building. Things may change later down the line and I will probably want a new challenge, however I know there are many roles I can progress to within in Orbit.
