Orbit has teamed up with the Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to support its child safety campaign – Brighter Beginnings.

'Keeping Kids Safe' packs, which have been designed by RoSPA as part of its campaign to help reduce accidents in the home, are now being offered free to all Orbit customers with children under the age of five.

The packs have been distributed from 1 April to coincide with Family Safety Week (#FamilySafetyWeek) and contain a variety of items to remind parents and carers about the potential dangers around the home. These include an easy-to-fit cupboard latch, a nursery thermometer, a falls prevention height chart and useful kitchen/bathroom resources including a flannel and weaning spoon, which all contain key safety advice and details of the free, RoSPA Lifeline number (0808 8010822).

Orbit and RoSPA also presented some packs to the Parenting Project in Bishopton, Stratford. The Parenting Project receives funding from Orbit and packs were given out at its stay and play session.

Louise Palese, Director of Customer Services at Orbit, said: “Supporting RoSPA’s Brighter Beginnings campaign means that we can help our customers in a very practical way, by supplying and distributing Keeping Kids Safe packs to over 3,500 families who have children under the age of five and are living in an Orbit home. The aim of the packs is to show parents and carers that there are some simple things they can do to prevent accidents and to provide the tools needed to do so.

“RoSPA’s Brighter Beginnings campaign is very much in line with our Happy Healthy Starts campaign, which also provides tools to help families thrive and supports our communities and works to tackle child poverty.

“We have written to those families who are eligible and told them about the free packs which will be posted out to them to coincide with Family Safety Week in April,” added Louise.

Rebecca Hickman, Head of Partnerships at RoSPA, added: “Accidents are the biggest killer of children and young people yet around two-thirds of parents don’t feel that they get enough advice and information on how to keep their little ones safe.

“Many accidents which occur in the home could be avoided, so we are delighted that a housing group of Orbit’s size is supporting our campaign. Reaching out to Orbit customers in this way will really help get our key child safety messages out to a wider audience in a very short space of time.”
