A 103-year-old Orbit customer has officially opened the newly refurbished community centre at Tanyard Farm in Coventry.
Elizabeth (Betty) Neary who has lived at Tanyard Farm for 35 years and the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Linda Bigham, officially declared Orbit's community centre open on Thursday (14 November).
Tanyard Farm’s community centre has been given a £37,000 refurbishment, which includes a new kitchen and replacement curtains, flooring and furniture.
Pippa Reeve, Placemaking and Partnerships Manager at Orbit said: “We wanted to create a space which would benefit everyone by providing somewhere our customers and other members of the community can come together and socialise. Social isolation can affect a lot of people, so we hope that our customers and the wider community will use the centre as much as possible.”
One of Orbit’s contract partners, Dodd Group, has supported the project with its ‘Community Crew’ who installed and decorated the kitchen, fitted replacement lighting and re-decorated the main rooms.
Matthew Lewis, Divisional Managing Director from Dodd Group added: “At Dodd Group we are passionate about supporting the communities in which we live and work. We were delighted to help out with this project as part of our commitment to Orbit and we hope that residents of Tanyard Farm enjoy their refreshed facility.”
The centre is used by members of Tanyard Farm’s independent living scheme and is now also available for hire to groups which will benefit local residents, such as gentle exercise classes, yoga and guest talks.
