Orbit volunteers plant 5,000m2 of wildflower meadow this winter in support of 30by30 biodiversity commitment

Orbit colleagues planted 5,000m2 of wildflower meadow alongside trees, hedges and bulbs, as part of the not-for-profit housing group’s commitment to ensure that 30% of its outdoor spaces enable nature’s recovery by 2030.

Orbit colleagues have planted 5,000m2 of wildflower meadow alongside trees, hedges and bulbs in support of the not-for-profit housing group’s ‘30by30’ biodiversity commitment.

Orbit colleagues volunteered at planting days across eight of its estates this winter. As well as the 5,000m2 of wildflower meadow, colleagues were supported by contractor partners to plant 35 UK native trees, 19 fruit trees, 330m2 of hedge plants, 1,200 bulbs and even a permanent Christmas tree.

The winter planting days continue Orbit’s commitment to The Wildlife Trusts’ ‘30by30’ campaign, as Orbit aims to ensure that 30% of its outdoor spaces will enable nature’s recovery by 2030. The commitment also aligns with the United Nations’ Convention on Biological Diversity.

Orbit’s 30by30 pledge is part of its environmental programme, Orbit Earth, which also sets out its objectives for climate action that support the move towards Net Zero and sustainable resource use.

David March, Head of Sustainability at Orbit, said: “We are delighted to work with colleagues and contractor partners that support our commitment to biodiversity and creating flourishing green spaces for our customers and communities to enjoy. Our planting initiatives not only have a positive impact on local wildlife and the environment, but also on our customers, by creating thriving outdoor areas which positively impact their wellbeing.”
