Members of Orbit’s executive team, and employees from across the organisation, joined forces with Bell Decorating Group to give the Graham Adams Community Centre a much-needed facelift, last week.

As part of Orbit’s employee volunteering scheme, more than 10 volunteers including Craig Wilcockson, Group People Director, and Joy Baggaley, Group Finance Director, donated their expertise and time to paint the main hall of the Southam community centre.

National painting and decorating contractor Bell Decorating Group donated materials and was on hand to oversee the volunteers and ensure the work was of a professional standard.

Managed by the Southam Church and Community Project Ltd, the Graham Adams Centre is at the heart of Southam, and provides a safe space for local events and community groups, such as Rainbows, Brownies, an over 60s lunch club and mother and baby yoga classes.

However, the centre was in need of a makeover, so Orbit and Bell Decorating Group were only too happy to get involved and help with such a worthy project.

Over the course of the day, the volunteers showcased their DIY skills making light work of the room, whilst contributing towards a project that will benefit the wider community in Southam.

Speaking on the day, Craig Wilcockson, Group People Director, of Orbit, said: “Volunteering isn’t a tick box exercise for us – it’s central to delivering our vision of building thriving communities. It connects our employees to our customers and communities. It’s paramount for Orbit in being a sustainable and responsible business and also its great fun too.”

Elaine Lambe, Community Centre Manager, of the Graham Adams Centre, said: “We’re very thankful to everyone who gave their time, skills and resources to improve the centre and give it a new lease of life. It was a good turn out today and the volunteers have really embodied the community spirit.”

Selina David, Community Engagement Co-ordinator of Bell Decorating Group, said: “Bell Decorating Group is dedicated to making positive changes in the community and we thank Orbit for contributing to that impact.”

Orbit encourages employees to volunteer in the communities they serve and offers each employee eight hours per year to invest in a cause of their choice.

In 2019/20, we aim to invest 2,500 hours in our communities. Since April 2019, Orbit employees have spent 199 hours volunteering and more than 400 people have signed up to take part in the scheme.
