Orbit awarded LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge Pioneer Status

Orbit has been awarded the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge Pioneer status for its dedication to creating safe and welcoming environments for LGBTQ+ customers.

The LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge scheme by HouseProud and delivered by Stonewall Housing, provides a comprehensive framework for social landlords to demonstrate their dedication to eliminating discrimination and supporting LGBTQ+ individuals in their communities.

To achieve Pledge Pioneer, Orbit has been required to show how it listens to LGBTQ+ customers at an executive or strategic level, increasing LGBTQ+ visibility and investing in employee training. At Orbit this has included:

  • The creation of an LGBTQ+ Customer Engagement Group to capture feedback on the services Orbit delivers, complete equality assessments and help to prioritise Orbit’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion programme.
  • An LGBTQ+ networking group, which provides a safe space for LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies to learn, connect and share lived experiences
  • A podcast created by the LGBTQ+ networking group as part of LGBTQ+ History Month to answer colleague questions about LGBTQ+ to help to break down barriers and improve understanding
  • LGBTQ+ content as part of colleague induction and training programmes, including sharing customer case studies and lived experiences.

Josie Bishton, Head of Support and Service Development, said: “We’re committed to putting our customers at the centre of our decisions and fostering inclusive communities where everyone can thrive. I’m delighted that this commitment has been recognised in the achievement of LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge Pioneer status and I’d like to thank the contribution of our LGBTQ+ customers who are working with us to help us better understand their needs and experiences and how we can make our communities safe and welcoming for all.”

A key aspect of the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge Scheme is the direct involvement of LGBTQ+ residents in its development. Notably, LGBTQ+ residents comprised three out of the eight members on the assessment panel, ensuring that their voices and experiences were central to the process. This involvement ensures that the pledge addresses the real and pressing needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Orbit is one of 14 organisations to be assessed by the panel as achieving LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge Pioneer Status.

Alexandra Duffy, Stonewall Housing Training Lead, added: “Previous research has shown us that many LGBTQ+ people don't feel safe even in their own homes or communities. These 14 organisations have worked hard to achieve the Pledge Pioneer requirements. It is a massive achievement that sends a clear signal: we all deserve a safe space to call home. These housing providers are helping to make this a reality.”
