Orbit increases housebuilding commitment by over 20% to 7,000 new and regenerated homes by 2030

Orbit, one of the UK’s foremost not-for-profit housing groups, has increased its 2030 new build and regeneration commitment to 7,000 homes, an increase of over 20%.

The revised target forms part of a new strategy for its development operation, Orbit Homes, and sees it build on the 5,700 homes it committed in its 2030 Strategy which was launched in April 2024.

Within its new development strategy, Orbit will be continuing direct build at scale, aiming to build around 60% of its new homes itself, as well as maintaining its tenure weighting towards affordable homes including social rent, affordable rent and shared ownership.

The strategy also demonstrates a more integrated approach, closely aligning Orbit’s cycle of activity from building new homes, to bringing them into management and the traditional operations of the housing association, through regeneration and the provision of future-fit homes.

Phil Andrew, Group Chief Executive at Orbit, said: “Our primary obligation is providing safe, decent and affordable homes for our existing customers. However, we are delighted to be able to launch our new strategy for Orbit Homes, including an increased commitment to building and regenerating 7,000 new homes by 2030. We know this is an ambitious target but we are determined to continue to build new homes to give more people access to an affordable home, and play our part in helping to tackle the UK’s housing crisis. We’re confident that with the recent measures announced by the Government and the robust strategy we have in place, that we can deliver on these and provide more people with a place they are proud to call home.”

Orbit’s recently appointed Chief Development Officer, Brian Nearney, will be responsible for delivering the strategy and leading Orbit’s Development Team in delivering high-quality, sustainable, inclusive homes that help to create lasting social value.
